Benny comes back with an absolute hard as nails album with this one. What a fantastic job by the Griselda shooter here. You got just about everything you need with this project. The rhymes are insanely good. He is so good at spitting these hard and realistic street bars. I’d put him in the same category as Styles P with how raw and talented he is. Every bar is finely crafted with the most elegant street talk but also clever as all hell. His rhyme scheme is stepped up with every release he has nowadays. The beats by Daringer are great on here as well. They really have that dark and sinister feel to them as Benny tramples all over them with the rhymes. You almost get the feel of walking down a dark alley with that pistol on your side trying to make a hand-to-hand deal without getting caught by the police. Notable songs on here include “Who Are You” featuring Royce Da 5’9″. Benny’s verse on here is just top notch. Dude is really killing it on the mic. The Intro to the album is another really dope beat that sets the tone for the whole project. From beginning to end, there aren’t really many low points on this album. This is definitely one to check out.

Problem is back with an album called S2, which follows up his debut album Selfish. I was really hoping for a lot more on this one. When he was starting to release songs for this one, I was really hyped. The one song “Conditioning” was flawless and that is what I wanted the whole album to sound like. He definitely does his thing lyrically. His voice is very unique and sounds great coming from the West Coast. He definitely gives you that California vibe as you listen through this project. I think he does a fantastic job on both the intro and the outro to the album. There’s a lot of booty-shaking references mixed throughout which is fine, but can become overkill at times. The beats are decent, but there really isn’t anything that is far and above better than other music out there today. I wanted to love this album, but I really only like it a little bit. There’s something missing from it and I can’t quite put my finger on it. Possibly some more personal experiences or stories? Maybe open up to the audience a bit? This MC is definitely poised to become a legend and I am fully confident he can do it. He just needs to tap into that right sound and vibe. Give us a new West Coast classic.

Paul Wall is back with a great mixtape for your listening pleasure. This is a really dope release that really captures the Houston sound. He takes some existing popular tracks and mixes in a few new ones here and there and we are left with a great experience. Lyrically, he definitely fills the project with all of the Houston slang that we love. He might not be the most gifted lyricist, but he sounds good when he is spitting that Texas game. The tracks that he flipped sound real good as well. He put the Texas touch on some great songs like “Smile Bitch” and “Boo’ed Up.” He really makes the singles his own and shows you how it is done in Houston. This is a great project to throw on while you are travelling and really plays through well. Keep up the great work Paul Wall.

Paul Wall - Frozen Face Vol. 1

At first listen, it sounds like this might just be some throw away tracks from Bone Thugs, but it actually gets better as it goes along. Bone Thugs has always been known for their gangster but melodic and harmonizing flow. That is what they flawlessly executed in the 90s, so most people want to hear more of that from them. I think this project sounds more of like their experimenting. Some of it didn’t work and some of it sounds like it could work. The first half of the album definitely sounds like throw away songs. As it goes along though, you can hear how they were trying some new things. They definitely sound great vocally and when you put them over different style beats, it actually turns out pretty good. “Stay Outta Mine” has a great upbeat feel to it and really sounds uplifting. “Remember Yesterday” has a sped up sample that is kind of reminiscent of the Heatmakerz or Kanye West style and Bone actually sounds pretty decent over it. They also have some club banger type records on here that sounded a little different than normal, but actually worked for them. For any true Bone Thug fans, you will definitely want to hear this project to see how they sound in a variety of ways.

Bone Thugs N Harmony - The Lost Files

Dropping 2 projects on the same day is quite a feat for some artists, but not Willie The Kid. Along with dropping this project, he also dropped Studio 28 which features production from Troy Ceasar. This one with producer Klever Skemes seems to be the better of the two. This one has an all around better feel to it. His rhymes are pretty decently crafted throughout. You get the luxurious metaphors and skillful wordplay that you know he is good for. The beats are little bit more banging on here. The highlight of this project has to be “Full Nelson” as the beat for this just knocks. His flow is very finely attuned to this one. Even though it is short at only 7 songs, I think this will be one that fans will appreciate.

Willie The Kid - Gold Rush 2

This was more of a laid back small project for MC Willie The Kid and producer Troy Ceasar. Weighing in at only 8 tracks, and a lot of them pretty short tracks at that, this project plays through pretty quickly. Lyrically, you get what you expect from Willie The Kid. He gives his opulent and flashy verses which are decent overall. The beats are decent but they are very very low key. If you are looking for that boom bap sound, you are not going to find that here. This is more of a smoothed out, jazzy kind of release. It’s not bad, it’s just that it doesn’t really have the intensity of other previous projects. If you are looking for something mellow, maybe something to play on your morning commute, throw this quick project on for a smooth ride.

First off, I love the idea of calling this project The Upstage. That is pure brilliance right there. You know that is in direct reference to the Diplomats project coming out on the same day. I don’t know why these dudes were left off of the Diplomat project. They were all integral parts of that whole camp’s success. To have a reunion and just leave them out is just sacrilege. With this project though, I think they honestly may have done what they set out to do and upstage Cam, Jim, and Juelz. Lyrically, they are all spitting that classic Diplomat fire on this project. The lyrics on here are definitely better than the the ones on the Diplomat project. You get top notch bars and metaphors from all of them. They are very clever and well thought-out. This was the kind of spitting we were used to back when they were doing their thing as a camp. The beats on this one were decent. I think over time, they lost a lot of the momentum and aren’t as hot out in the industry as they once were. This doesn’t allow them as easy as access to the hottest beats out there. Nonetheless, there are some dope tracks on here. If nothing else, this project is consistent. That is hard to do nowadays, but they have managed to do it. They showed everyone that they don’t need the big doggs to continue to spit heat. I really hope we see a lot more work from everyone in Dipset and I hope that they can all work together again as they did in the past.
