BORN SUN & CANIBUS – SHARPSHOOTERS: FIRST DEPLOYMENT

Born Sun releases a new album with some assistance from Canibus. All in all, this is a pretty decent album from beginning to end. On the mic, Born Sun sounds pretty good and gives us some sufficient lyrics. The features from Canibus are all tight. You pretty much can’t lose getting features from Canibus. You will see some other features from K-Solo, Planet Asia, Akon, and more. The beats are pretty standard throughout the project. There are definitely a few highlights though. “War Hammerz” featuring Harlem Geo has a banging beat in which both MCs rip through the beat. “Zombies” is an expertly-written and very descriptive song about zombies of course. “Omega Man” is another well-told story about travelling around in the end of the world. All in all, Born Sun and Canibus do a decent job at this album. A couple more tweaks and they probably could have been closer to a classic.

MASTER BUILDERS & CANIBUS – THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING

Master Builders is a group that I wasn’t too familiar with before I saw this album out. The group consists of Born Sun, Royal Crown Cartel, Ophrap, & Science. They have a Canibus feature on just about every song on here. As far as the bars, you already know what you are going to get from Canibus. He is ripping his way through verses just as he always does. The other members may not rhyme as good as him, but they hold their own on the mic and keep the project flowing along. They have one feature from Grand Puba who is of course legendary and does his thing on the project. The production on this album is pretty decent overall. The highlight of the whole project is the last track “Broken Weapons.” The beat on this song is amazing and brings out the best of the Master Builders. They all sound amazing on this beat. It was definitely dope to finish off the album with such an amazing song. All in all, this was a good listen. It might not be for everyone out there, but real hip hop heads can see the value in such a project.

CANIBUS & PETE ROCK – C

Legendary rhymer Canibus teams up with legendary producer Pete Rock to give us a quick new EP of some of the work that they have. There are 3 new songs and acapella and instrumental versions of 2 of the songs. There is even a feature from Bronze Nazareth on there as well. On the mic, Canibus is as sharp as he ever was laying down insanely well-thought-out rhymes. Pete Rock does a solid job on the boards as well making it easy for Canibus to flow. All in all, this was an interesting matchup taht I wouldn’t have predicted. I will gladly take more if they are serving it up though.

CANIBUS – THE ALMIGHTY ERA V.1

Canibus delivers a collection of a ton of his recent work in this first edition album. There are a mammoth 34 tracks for fans to take a walk down memory lane. Canibus is a master with the pen and shows us why as he selects some of his best work over the last decade or so. His pen is all but unmatched. He selects some of the beats that are probably better throughout his career. There are definitely some beats on here that will get your head nodding. This is a great showcase of some of his finest work.

CANIBUS – ONE STEP CLOSER TO INFINITY (DELUXE)

Canibus drops another new project, but this one is a bit different from the Kaiju album. Canibus has always been able to craft some of the dopest rhymes known to man and he does that on this new album as well. He has some decent features from Jurassic 5, K-Solo, Born Sun, and more. The beats on here are just not up to the quality level that we want to see. It just doesn’t feel as fresh overall. There is something definitely missing from this offering. It might be hard to put a finger on, but there definitely needs some overall work on here. This definitely isn’t the worst Canibus album though.

CANIBUS – KAIJU

Canibus may have unlocked the key to a dope album after a lot of time! He seems to have selected a lot better collection of beats this go round. Body bag Ben assisted with a lot of the beats here and they definitely came out harder with more of that boom bap and hard drums. Canibus really shines over these types of beats. His rhymes are out of this world and he definitely takes it to a whole other level on the lyrical tip. He also gets assists from the late, great DMX, MF Doom, Born Sun, Kool Keith, and more. The highlight of this project is “Animal Husbandry” with its absolutely neck-breaking beat. Canibus really stepped into his proper lane a lot more with this album. This is the Canibus that the people want. Keep it rolling Bis!

CANIBUS & MARTY MCKAY – MATRIX THEORY V

For some reason, there were 5 of these projects made. On the mic, Canibus has always demonstrated that he has otherworldly abilities when it comes to crafting lyrics and this project is no different. He is and always has been talented. Why he chose to work with Marty McKay, a guy that thinks he’s a rapper, is beyond me. Marty McKay should not be rapping. His flow is not very good at all. There are some good features on here from Locksmith, Chino XL, Copywrite, and Mad Squablz. The production on this 5 track project leaves a lot to be desired. It almost sounds like more of a Linkin Park project than a rap album. So hip hop heads are not going to enjoy this or any of the others in the series either. I would probably skip over this one.

CANIBUS & JAXIMUS – MICROPHONE LAND

Canibus teams up with a horrible rapper named Jaximus to give us an album for some reason. Off the rip, Canibus is a legend and deserves so much respect and admiration from the hip hop community. Everyone knows his story and his journey through the game. His lyrical prowess is almost unmatched but his lack of selecting quality beats to rhyme over is something that has plagued him throughout his entire career. This “rapper” Jaximus that is on this album is one of the worst rappers I have ever heard. His flow is God awful as he can’t stay on the beat. His wordplay is elementary as you listen to him rhyme simple 1 syllable words together. I’m sure there are dead people that can rhyme better. This guy Jaximus, please, please, please, put down the microphone and don’t ever pick it up again. You are a disgrace to the art of rhyming. Stop embarrassing yourself. Canibus, don’t ever work with this guy again. Work with people on your own level, not beneath you. If you are a fan of Canibus, I’m sure you’ll enjoy his bars on this album if you can get through the garbage that Jaximus tries to do.

FOUR HORSEMEN – THE LAST RIDE

Canibus, Killah Priest, Kurupt, and Ras Kass combine forces once again to form the epic and legendary Four Horsemen for the creation of another album. You already know that this one is going to be an onslaught of bars and all 4 MCs definitely do their thing when it comes to delivering the lyrics. Ras Kass really shines through the most out of all but Kurupt has some strong performances as well. The beats on here are okay. I do feel like they could have made better selections for such a monumental album, but they are still pretty good if nothing else. “Believer” is one of the strongest records on this album. It definitely has a theme throughout of the four horsemen of the apocalypse coming to end the world which pretty much makes sense for a project like this. The fans of bars out there will definitely not want to miss this one.

CANIBUS – FULL SPECTRUM DOMINANCE REPOLARIZATION

Canibus is back with another chapter in the Full Spectrum Dominance series. As is always the case, his rhymes are mind boggling and the beats need work. This has been his curse forever and I wish it would change. It’s not really a bad project, it’s just that it could be so much better. Canibus spits crazy rhymes all over every beat on here. He always sounds dope. You can never take that away from him. It’s just that the beats aren’t as good as they could be. There are songs like “The Odds” that have guitar rifts that just seem out of place. The hook on that song just sounds so weak as well. On the other hand, the highlight of the project is “Canibus ^ Cambatta” in which both MCs spit super long verses of pain effortlessly. These rhymes on here are just mind-bending and you just have to hear that track. I want to see Canibus on some better beats. Create some better structured songs. The potential is there.

This was not one of Canibus’s better pieces of work. It’s absolutely true that his rhymes are crazy good on here. He sounds like he possesses the entire world’s wealth of knowledge in his brain. He conveys it quite cleverly over the mic. Fans will not be strangers to how he spits. Once again, it is the production side that is lacking. I’d say the best track on here is “Pen Game” and it is just a mediocre track. I think for Canibus to truly shine like I know that he can, he needs to spit some super focused rhymes over top of a top notch producer. He really needs the beats to bring out the best in him. This album wasn’t all bad, but it wasn’t anywhere near the level that it should be. I will forever be checking out his work though.

CANIBUS & MARTY MCKAY – MATRIX THEORY I EP

This was a god awful mess of a project. Why this even came out, we will never know. The problem that has plagued Canibus forever is the beats that he gets on and he found the worst ones to ever get on here with this project. He teams up with a seemingly garbage producer Marty McKay and the rest is just an absolute train wreck. I suppose if you took the lyrics that Canibus and featured artist Chris Rivers spit off of this project and just let them stand alone, you could see the complexity of the rhymes. When you put them on this mess of an EP, it just completely drowns them in a toilet of chaos. At only 4 tracks, it just made me wonder who in their right mind would think that this was a good project to put out. Canibus is the man, but for the love of God, go get some better beats.

CANIBUS – FULL SPECTRUM DOMINANCE 2

Canibus drops off a very quick second installment of his Full Spectrum Dominance series. I’m not even sure that you can call this an album. There are 8 songs and the intro and the outro are both skits. So that leaves us with 6 new songs that to be honest, it’s the same ol story concerning Canibus’ music over the years. On the mic, he is fire. He has always been an extremely talented MC. The beats however are borderline trash. These heavy guitar rifts sloppily laid over top of beats is just not doing it for me. This has always been his downfall. Dope lyrics over trash beats. 20 years after he has come onto the scene, it’s sad to say that this is still happening. Please Canibus, find some better beats already.

CANIBUS – FULL SPECTRUM DOMINANCE

The one thing that Canibus has always suffered from is having incredibly dope lyrics, but no beats to match his high level of skill. With this latest project, he definitely tries to correct this plaguing mistake. Lyrically this dude has always been incredible and still is. He sounds like he was locked in an ancient library for 7 lifetimes and came out knowing every secret about the cosmos ever. He definitely serves up some complex rhymes on this new album. It starts out a little weird but gets going as it continues. I think for the production, he definitely tried to find some better boom-bap type beats with good samples. The highlight is “Authentic Level Of Greatness.” This song just has a pure hip-hop feel with hard drums and Canibus flows over it effortlessly. Canibus is still out here slaying all you common rappers. There was a time he couldn’t be touched at all and I believe he is still in that territory lyrically.
