BIG SEAN & HIT-BOY – WHAT YOU EXPECT

Big Sean teams up with producer Hit-Boy to give us a new quick 6 song project. This one definitely gets right to the point. On the mic, Big Sean is really dope and his bars are pretty solid. He has a great flow and never seems to run out of words. He is able to ride any kind of beat out there and still come up with witty lines to impress listeners. Hit-Boy is decent on the tracks. There really isn’t a standout song at all, but he does a good job at keeping it high energy. All in all, this was a decent combination. I’d be interested in seeing what they could cook up as far as an album. I’d like to see what a hit single from them would sound like.

BIG SEAN – DETROIT 2

Big Sean releases his highly anticipated mixtape Detroit 2. On the mic, Big Sean definitely showcases some skill. There are some of these tracks where he definitely goes hard on the bars. On “Lucky Me,” he definitely crushes the mic throughout with relentless bars about real life. The production on this album is a bit of a mixed bag. Most of the beats were at least decent. There were a handful of tracks I could probably do without. One thing that is definitely apparent is that there are too many tracks on this album. Weighing in at 21 tracks, there definitely could have been a chunk of them shaved off. There are some highlights to the album though. On “Deep Reverence,” Big Sean enlists the late, great Nipsey Hussle to bless us with a verse. It definitely made me miss Nipsey more. “Body Language” with Ty Dolla Sign & Jhene Aiko is another great track. Ty Dolla Sign sounds so great on the hook as he does on most songs. The track “Friday Night Cypher” is an immense song at about 9 and a half minutes. To be 100% honest, we could have just kept the verses from Sean, Royce, and Eminem on there. Cut out all the other artists because it was whack. Some of them can’t even flow to the beat. I like the idea of the song, but the execution is all wrong. Get some REAL Detroit spitters on there like Ty Farris or Kid Vishis. This was a decent album overall, but I think it is lacking a power single or two. You need a song to really get fans excited for the album and I just don’t think he delivered with any power singles here. A few highlights and a few filler songs pretty much make up this album. It was a decent effort, but we are hoping for more next time.

BIG SEAN & METRO BOOMIN – DOUBLE OR NOTHING

This was an album that wasn’t necessarily bad, it just didn’t do anything at all. Big Sean is a dope lyricist and Metro Boomin got some decent beats, but putting these two together for a project didn’t really do much for me. There really wasn’t anything too memorable on here. Big Sean definitely does his thing on the mic and has some decent bars, but there really wasn’t anything that blew me away. The beats were good, but again, there was nothing that I am going to be recalling later in the day after hearing it. This album just sort of was. It came out and people heard it and that was the gist of it.

BIG SEAN – I DECIDED

This is ¬†another instance where it hurts to have to do this review. With 3 previously successful and great albums under his belt, I thought that Big Sean would be able to deliver another classic with this fourth one. This is nothing close to the truth. This album was an enormous letdown. To be perfectly honest, the best thing about this album is Eminem’s guest verse on “No Favors.” All you have to do is listen to Em’s verse and that is really all you need from this album. I thought the singles “Bounce Back” and “Moves” were pretty weird and boring. There is virtually nothing of value on this album and it is such a huge let down because his previous album was damn near classic. Some of these tracks on this album sound like he was just practicing in the studio with Jhene Aiko and they threw half a song at the wall to see if it would stick. Next time Sean, please put more effort into your next project and give us something that is going to be remembered instead of all these throw away tracks.

BIG SEAN & JHENE AIKO – TWENTY88

This was a pretty good offering. If nothing else can be said, this album is very consistent. I have always liked Big Sean as an artist and a lyricist. He’s not 100% consistent but I think with each passing year, he grows more and more as an artist. Teaming up with Jhene Aiko to release this album was very good. It is only 8 songs so it’s not too long where the listener loses focus. This is definitely something you wanna throw on while you are boo-ed up with your significant other. When it is a quiet night in, you definitely wanna throw this on and I guarantee you, you will be getting some. All of the songs have that feel of yearning for a partner. Big Sean definitely delivers clever lines while Jhene Aiko complements him perfectly by providing a sultry backdrop with her beautiful, soft voice. Will this album go down in the history books? No. Will it get you some nookie for a few weeks? Yes.
