Kanye West releases the ridiculously long album Donda for fans to pick apart. There are really a lot of different tracks on this thing. Some are good and some are not. There’s a lot to unpack with this one. First off, it’s way too long to listen to. There are entirely too many tracks. Two hours is ungodly long and can’t be devoured in one sitting. With the bars, I think Kanye still has a pretty strong flow. There are times where he almost sounds like he used to back when he first hit the scene. He has a ton of great features from the likes of Jay-Z, The LOX, Jay Electronica, The Weekend, Westside Gunn, Conway, Kid Cudi, and many more. The production on this record is really all over the place. It mostly has a gospel sounding feel to it, but there are some soulful songs, and there are some trap sounding songs. “Jail” is the far and away highlight of this whole album which features Francis & The Lights and Jay-Z. This song is Kanye at his best and one of the best Jay-Z verses we have heard in awhile. Other standout songs include “Keep My Spirit Alive” featuring Conway, KayCyy, and Westside Gunn. “Jesus Lord” is a fantastic song that features some heavy hitters like The LOX, Swizz Beatz, and Jay Electronica. Jay Electronica’s verse on here proves why he is one of the best lyricists in hip hop today. He really is underrated and this verse is proof of that. Other songs that really stand out are “Hurricane” featuring Lil Baby and The Weeknd and “Moon” featuring Don Toliver and Kid Cudi. Both of these songs are very intoxicating and will probably have you playing them over and over again. At first listen, it might seem like this album was a flop for Kanye, but if you keep listening over and over, you will find some jewels buried in this super long album. It might not be Kanye’s greatest work ever, but you can tell he put time into it and it definitely stands out as important. His rollout for the album with the 3 live shows shows his dedication to making sure this dedication to his mother went off in grand style. Kanye continues to be an important part of hip hop music and continues to reinvent himself.

OVERALL RATING: 3.5 out of 5 Cheesesteaks
