Eminem comes back incredibly hard on this latest offering in the form of a surprise album. I woke up that Friday and saw a new Eminem track featuring Slaughterhouse. I thought it was an old, unreleased track, but to my delight, it was a new track off of a brand new full length studio album. As far as the lyrics go, Eminem is top tier and the rhymes and flows on this album are expert level. This is the level that all MCs aspire to get to. Eminem is a lyrical genius and he spits bar after bar and punchline after punchline, sometimes at breakneck speed like on the song with Young MA “Unaccommodating.” His duo with Ed Sheeran “Those Kinda Nights” is a fantastic party song with a smooth hook sung by Ed Sheeran. I feel that this was the collaboration with him that he had been looking to make on past albums and failed. This time he finally got it right. “In Too Deep” is a well-written record about 2 people cheating when they are in relationships and all of the complicated feelings with that. “Darkness” is another expertly-written song that goes into the mind of the Las Vegas shooter. He blends his words together comparing drinking and shooting in only the way Eminem could. Anyone offended by this song didn’t really listen to it. It is a glaring look at mass shootings in the United States today. “Leaving Heaven” is a scathing collaboration with Skylar Grey that examines his broken relationship with his late father. “Yah Yah” is a fantastic posse cut that features a slamming beat and assists from Royce Da 5’9″, Black Thought, Q-Tip, & Denaun Porter. On the song “Stepdad,” Eminem shows us how bad it can be to have to grow up with an abusive stepdad. “I Will” is a super dope cut that features Slaughterhouse minus Joe Budden that will be sure to have you analyzing all the bars. I think Eminem went the smart route with this album and stopped listening to what everyone else wanted him to do and just made dope music. When artists get out of their own head and get away from social media, they can really get back to doing what they do best and just be creative. Eminem created a near masterpiece with this one and put him right back up where he was before his Revival flop. Cop this one with the quickness and listen over and over and over again.
