CHANCE THE RAPPER – THE BIG DAY

Chance The Rapper delivers his debut album in a big way especially with the title The Big Day. There was certainly a ton of hype for this album to drop. Unfortunately, I don’t think it quite lived up to all the speculation. On the mic, I think Chance can be good. He almost reminds me of an old Kanye West back when he used to deliver bars that connected with the people. Being that they are both from Chicago, it is easy to see why parallels can be drawn. Chance also handles most of the production on this album which is quite an impressive feat. He includes a lot of tracks that almost have a church-type feel with clever choir samples. The drums also sound pretty decent throughout the project. The length of the album (22 tracks) is certainly a detriment to the project. This was all but a double album and way too much to listen to in one sitting. In a time when short projects are too short, this is not the answer to that dilemma. He definitely could have trimmed it down quite a bit. Another element that seems to be lacking is the far and away commercial, radio single. There isn’t really a standout song as there should be to lead the charge. While songs like “All Day Long” with John Legend and “Get A Bag” with Calboy sound like they could almost be a single, when you are done listening to the entire project, you are almost so worn out that it is hard to recall a favorite. I definitely think Chance is cooking with something, it’s just that it wasn’t exactly shown to us correctly on this first project.
